The Four Infinite Thoughts

I want to return to an article already written that briefly mentions the most powerful attitudes for creating beneficial energies and favorable circumstances in your lives.

It matters not whether you have time to meditate or the inclination for a regular spiritual practice. If you take to heart the integration of these simple thoughts into your daily life, you will avoid many problems and create happy tomorrows.

These are also keys that can untangle and adapt the circumstances you encounter daily — opening every door and sparing you many an inconvenience.

The first key is kindness. We use it with people who are happy. One of the traps that creates many negative effects in our karma is jealousy and envy. Many who are miserable speak negatively — and even hatefully — of those who are fortunate and happy. If these people are living in favorable circumstances it is because they have contributed to their situation through beneficial gestures, words and thoughts that have helped living beings. To envy them harms no one but the person generating such words and attitudes. If you see happy people, make friends of them — happiness and smiles are contagious, and we all want to be happy.

Then there are the unhappy. With them one must generate compassion. Here too it is certain that these people are reaping what they have sown in the past. But an attitude that generates blame, guilt and shame is not conducive to serenity of mind. On the contrary, one must have care and compassion. You will notice that when you help someone it immediately generates tranquility, happiness and above all peace. Serenity of mind increases your capacities, and helping others leads to happy tomorrows.

We sometimes have the happiness of meeting virtuous people. These are important and privileged moments. To make the most of these encounters and foster a harmonic resonance with the virtues that are manifest in others, we generate joy. Being happy about the accomplishments of those who are virtuous will increase within you those same beneficial dispositions. Thus, celebrate those who are virtuous and avoid all envious words that could contaminate your serenity of mind and cut off the possibilities of evolution offered by the simple presence of such beings.

Finally, what to do when we are confronted with people who are fundamentally bad and sometimes malevolent? It is a reality of our world that there exist people who take pleasure in causing harm, stealing and hurting others. Here the key is equanimity — and on a lesser register, indifference. Above all, do not attempt to correct such people! A person engaged in evil has no interest in the good. Attempting to make them understand what is right will only attract their hatred and attention, with the unpleasant consequences that can follow. The universe knows what to do with such people. Remain neutral, indifferent and in equanimity.

Thus, to summarize: with the happy, the key is kindness; with the unhappy, compassion; with the virtuous, joy; and with the harmful, equanimity.

Have a great weekend!!
