The Path of Light — Towards Freedom from Suffering

Life is always full of challenges, trials, and moments of suffering and sadness. This is the lot of human life as long as we have not understood and mastered the true nature of who we are.

Let us take a moment to imagine, to visualize another aspect of reality. Let yourself be carried along in a visualization without judgement; simply imagine how such movements of being might be experienced in the description that follows.

Imagine that within your heart there is an atom, infinitely small, yet containing the Great Spirit, God, the Primordial Intelligence, Allah or a Higher Power—whatever the name—that creative power which created the universes. In fact, this particle of energy is what created you! It carries within it the will that gave birth to your body and the circumstances of your life. It chose your parents, your face, your talents and the people who would have the greatest influence on your lives. It chose them to foster your evolution. It remembers everything: every thought, every word, every gesture and every event in your life, down to the smallest detail. Yet it leaves you completely free. It influences nothing. In fact, there is no difference between who you are and this particle of energy. It and you are connected to the whole of what constitutes the entire universe. It is just that life is so difficult and perilous that you do not feel it. Let yourself imagine what such a consciousness might be. And see that you are in fact a particle of that consciousness.

Now imagine a moment of confusion. You are walking, your mind weighed down by a difficulty, a worry that keeps going round and round — itself the result of your past thoughts, words and actions.

Then, on that very path, someone needs help.

Spontaneously, without calculation, you offer them what they need.

And in that instant, something dissolves within you. The difficulty that had been haunting you fades away — overshadowed, dispersed, forgotten. That divine particle within you, which remembers everything, then begins to gently reorganize the universe around you. From this single act of helping others, it weaves an invisible web of future blessings.

Your conscious mind sees this. And it chooses. It commits itself, willingly and resolutely, to thoughts, words and deeds that do ever more good around you.

Joy grows. Peace spreads — in your home, amongst your loved ones, in your workplace. Day after day, your light shines ever further. The old habits that bound you to suffering diminish, replaced by a lighter, freer presence. Then, seeing this, understanding this, you commit yourself even more to practices, thoughts, words and actions that help more and more people in the best possible way.

Over time, your being undergoes a profound transformation. You are no longer flesh, blood, mucus and bone — you become pure light. An angel, whose activity touches millions of beings across a multitude of worlds. For you have become what you were always destined to become: an angel of light, of infinite compassion and boundless love.

It is important to understand what our destiny is. Suffering and death are not inevitable. It sometimes takes many lifetimes to understand spiritual realities, and the distractions of life make this understanding difficult. But the path, the first steps to embark on the path of liberation and fulfilment, is so simple.

Look within yourself for the reasons why you are here. Your talents, your abilities, what you love to do. This is what we have chosen to experience. These are the abilities we have chosen to become who we truly are. Now find out how who you are can best help others. Always start with the feeling. The feeling must come first, even if you sometimes have to imagine it before you experience it. It is a practice, an exercise to be done. Visualize how good you will feel when you use our gifts to help others. Only then do we find the skillful means, the rational thoughts that lead to actualizing these gifts we carry to help others. Despite the endless distractions and attachments that life presents us with, we must learn to choose the divinity that we truly are.

Help one another. Love one another. Embark on the path that leads to liberation from all suffering and to endless bliss.
