Last week I spoke to you of the two perfumes of The Essential Series. Today we will look at The Elements Series.
Many nations throughout the world have theories about the elements developed by healers and wisdom keepers who understood the complexities the humans in relationship with nature.
I’ve created 7 shamanic all natural perfumes. Although they are made with the methodology and design of traditional high French perfumery, they do have therapeutic and spiritual attributes. These attributes are very special and to my knowledge there’s nothing like them anywhere. Thus I’m writing this article so that these special qualities may be understood. That will make it possible to use them as they were intended and not only as natural perfume.
I am a Native American healer. As most of you already know, when First Nations perform ceremonies or healing rituals, we always begin by smudging (burning specific herbs) to clear the space. Twenty years ago when I was called to intensive care units in hospitals and other similar places, I could not smudge. I had to work through dense energy fields in an unnatural environment without my customary purification. Tough… so I got to work.

We are frequently confronted with the imperfection of the body which was granted to us for our time on Earth. Our genetics are considerably impoverished by centuries of an artificial lifestyle, genetically modified foods, chemical drugs, vaccines, far from nature, thus more and more of people suffer from various serious and debilitating handicaps and health problems. Formerly, before European colonization, people who were different, had handicaps and who yet survived childhood were appreciated for their particular gifts and they were invited to discover them.

Sage is the most common and most important purifying herb used in Native American ceremonies. You will never see a Native American traditional ritual were burning sage is not one of the first things the medicine person or shaman will do. Sage is a very masculine plant. It is the strongest of the Native American purifying plants. Sage dispenses a strong earthy smell. The significance of its English name, sage, also means wise old man. Many sage varieties contain hormones. It is probably one of the reasons Native Americans consider it as a masculine species. In fact, herbalists will often use the garden variety (Salvia officinalis) as a tea to harmonize the hormonal balance in women. The smoke purification that it offers is so powerful that it sometimes causes respiratory discomfort in those who have lung diseases due to excess mucus. We often surround our sacred objects with sage before storing them so that they are constantly protected against any evil or negative influence.
Burning smudge, called smudging, is used as a spiritual offering and as a means of purifying the energy around people and places. This is often called “creating sacred space”.
