All the great traditions of the world agree that human beings contain the sum of everything that exists in the universe. In today\u2019s society, which emerged from the first civilizations of our era, including the Greek and Roman civilizations, we find the same idea. Socrates, one of the greatest thinkers of these civilizations, said: Know thyself, and thou shalt know the universe and the gods.<\/em><\/p>\n Knowing oneself is not easy. We are not our thoughts. Our thoughts come and go constantly, but they have no existence of their own. If we try to see where they come from, we find nothing. If we look at where they remain in the present, we find nothing. If we look at where they go, we also find nothing. The same is true of our emotions. We are not our emotions. They behave in the same way as thoughts and have no existence of their own. If we look at the human body, we see that everything seems impermanent and illusory and that, from one day to the next its condition changes, that we age, become ill and die. Yet consciousness remains. But what is consciousness? If we look for it, we find nothing\u2026 Yet it exists, but it is as elusive as a gust of wind. Try to remain fully aware of all your thoughts and emotions without being influenced or distracted by them for half an hour\u2026 or even five minutes. You will see how difficult it is.<\/p>\n Of all the quests for truth in this world, there is none more important than that of the true nature of who we are. A reader\u2019s comment recently contradicted my assertion that human beings are at the pinnacle of evolution on earth because animals seem more evolved than we are, since they do not destroy the world in which life unfolds. But we must understand that the free will that characterizes human beings, and which allows for such errors, is also the principle that gives us access to the maximum evolution of our conscious state. Immortality, enlightenment, ascension, the rainbow body, whatever name we give it, this evolution is only possible in our human condition. Neither animals, minerals, plants, demigods, nor other entities, such as devas of places and various spirits, have access to this possibility of evolution.<\/p>\n Thus, knowing oneself is the highest and greatest work one can wish to undertake. But how can this be done? What is the path that leads to the discovery of our true nature? All the great traditions indicate that this cannot be undertaken without dedication and the right relationship with a master, a guru, and a lama, who is defined as the jewel that fulfills all wishes. In today\u2019s world, finding such a person is very rare. There are not many of them, and those who are truly enlightened are usually very discreet. This is necessary because there is constant and virulent persecution against such beings, as our recent history with the crucifixion of Christ testifies. This has not subsided; the means used are different, but the repression is still as active as ever.<\/p>\n So, I give you a clue to reaching this luminous plateau of a right relationship with a great master. Pray. Ask. Make offerings. Start now to devote specific and regular moments of your days to spiritual practice. This jewel must be earned. It does not come without effort or merit. Go into nature where everything is true, where there are no lies. Go there to meditate and pray and simply walk so that nature inspires you and shows you the true face of truth and reality. Make offerings to the spirits of nature so that your wanderings are welcomed and can inspire you. Above all, let us remain conscious. Let us be vigilant, let us be guardians of our thoughts and emotions. Let us not get carried away by negative emotions that generate heavy karma and delay our evolution. Let us favor solitude over worldly entertainment. Let us be generous rather than accumulating ephemeral material goods. Let us cultivate the virtues of compassion, honesty, integrity, joy, equanimity and kindness. These causes will produce good effects and, if we are persevering and tireless in our desire to know ourselves, we will attain mastery of the world and the universe and be free, truly free at last. We will know the ultimate joy that nothing can tarnish, the endless bliss that cannot be marred by circumstances or beings.
